Computer Ethics…

When I was in the library, I found a book that caught my attention. Its all about computer ethics.

What is Computer Ethics?

Computer ethics could be defined as the systematic study of the ethical and social impact of computers in the information society. The ethical and social issues under discussion involve the acquisition, distribution, storage, processing and dissemination of digital data information systems and how individuals and groups interact with these systems and data. The moral consideration of computer ethics are related to the responsibility and accountability of the computer users and professionals with regard to the design and implementation of information systems.

Computer ethics also include the study of policies, rules, and legislation that refer to a particular situation and the alternative ethical decisions, as well as the social implications of these alternatives.

Negative Effects of Technology to the Moral of Children Today…

The title of my blog is my topic in our communication arts II for our research paper.

Today many of us are using computers especially the children today.  Technology plays a significant role in children today and this role is rapidly increasing transforming the everyday lives of children in profound ways.  As computer becomes easier to use, young children use of technology is becoming more widespread.

This is not the first time concern has been raised over the effect that new technology has on children. Similar concerns have accompanied each new introduction of media technology in the last few decades. In the 1990s, arguments ensued about the harmful effects of computer games and violent videos. Other concerns which have been made throughout history in relation to new media include theatre, the press, popular literature, cinema, radio and television, on the grounds that they would have a damaging effect on impressionable young minds.

Whether it is positive or negative, computer technology is rapidly increasing, playing a significant role in shaping children lives. The use of computer technology by children will continue to rise and no doubt more in-depth research will be conducted to determine the effect this has on children. Empirical research is essential to understand the balance between the potential and the dangers of computer technology.

Scientists Scramble to Analyze Haiti Quake…

Since the ground shook Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12 and sent the densely populated city into chaos, scientists have been harnessing every possible tool to quickly assemble a detailed picture of a region in which scientific research had already been difficult to conduct.

At 4:53 p.m. local time on the day of the quake, a magnitude-7.0 temblor struck just 25 kilometers west-southwest of Port-Au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The shallow quake occurred along the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden fault system, one of several major faults defining the boundary between the Caribbean and North America tectonic plates that move past each other in an east-west direction near Haiti. A section of fault approximately 50 kilometers long moved during the quake, says Gavin Hayes of the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. The largest amount the fault slipped was 4.5 meters.

The devastation has been extreme. Poor building construction and dense population have made what by seismic standards is a big but not a massive earthquake, into a major disaster. As of January 15, tens of thousands of people were reported dead.

Now scientists are bracing for what might happen next. “Our folks and others are acquiring all the imagery they can in order to examine possible landslide-dammed drainages that could create subsequent flash flood hazard, identify surface rupture and look for the extent of … ground failure,” says David Applegate, senior science adviser for natural hazards with the U.S. Geological Survey.
